Used Gibson EH-185 Amp and Lap Steel set circa 1939

A rare combo in this country, and in great original condition. The lap steel in this set is the older but more favoured version of the EH185 with the legendary Charlie Chtistian pickup and ‘chocalate’ control knobs. A great steel for modern players as it doesn’t have the bridge cover that gets in the way of right hand damping on many vintage steels. It just sings!

The EH185 amp has a pair of the early versions of the 6L6 power amp tubes putting out around 20 watts in this circuit. Preamp tubes are 6j7 octals which are a more complex sounding tube than the 12AX7 and 12AY7 9-pin preamp tubes that replaced the octal tubes in American amps later in the 50s. This amp is largely original and sounds great. As stated by Vintage Guitar Magazine:”‘Even a quick blast through a good 1939-’40 Gibson EH-185 comes as a shocker; not only usable, but deep, rich, biting, and full of character, this amp is a world-class tone machine, and it works for just about anything short of the extremes of heavy rock and metal. Not that this is news to everyone”.

Both amp and lap steel case are covered in luxurious, lacquered aircraft-style tweed cloth with red race stripes (so you play faster).
